When Your Baby Frequently Spits Up Milk

Newborn & Parenting

Many babies bring up small amounts of milk after feeds. In most cases the baby is comfortable, feeding well and gaining weight.

Simple steps that may help

  • Feed smaller amounts more often.
  • Burp during and after the feed.
  • Keep the baby upright for some time after feeding.
  • Avoid tight clothing around the tummy.

When it needs medical attention

  • Vomiting is forceful or after every feed.
  • Vomit is green, or contains blood.
  • Poor weight gain or reduced urine.
  • The baby is very irritable or refuses feeds.
  • Cough, choking or breathing difficulty during feeds.
