Burping and Feeding Basics
Babies often swallow some air while feeding. Burping helps to release that air and can make the baby more comfortable.
Simple burping positions
- Hold the baby upright against your shoulder, supporting the head.
- Sit the baby on your lap, supporting the chest and chin.
- Gently pat or rub the back for a few minutes.
Points to remember
- Burp during a pause in the feed and again after the feed.
- Do not shake the baby at any time.
- If no burp comes after a few minutes, it is usually fine.
- Keep the baby upright for a short while after feeding.
Talk to a doctor if
- The baby is very uncomfortable after every feed.
- Vomiting is forceful or frequent.
- Feeding is poor or weight gain is slow.
