Common Cold and Cough in Children
Young children can get several colds in a year, especially after they start going to school or playschool. Most colds settle on their own, but a few need medical attention.
What usually happens
A cold often begins with a running nose, sneezing and mild fever, followed by cough. The cough may continue for a week or more even after the child feels better.
Simple home care
- Offer fluids often and continue normal feeding.
- Keep the room airy and free from smoke and strong smells.
- Saline nasal drops may help a blocked nose in small children when advised.
- Allow extra rest and sleep.
When to see a doctor
- Difficulty in breathing, fast breathing or chest indrawing.
- Fever continuing beyond 24 hours despite home care.
- Ear pain, ear discharge or continuous crying.
- Poor feeding, vomiting or reduced urine.
- Cough that continues for more than 2 weeks.
Important
Cough syrups and antibiotics are not required for every cold. They should be used only when a doctor advises them for your child.
