Understanding Your Child's Growth

Child Health

Every child grows at their own pace. Instead of comparing your child with other children, it is more useful to follow your own child's growth over time.

What is measured

  • Weight
  • Height or length
  • Head size in small babies
  • Development steps such as sitting, walking and speaking

Why regular measurement helps

When measurements are recorded at each visit, the doctor can see the pattern. A steady pattern is usually reassuring. A sudden change is easier to notice early when records are kept.

What parents can do

  • Keep one file or book with all growth records and vaccination details.
  • Offer a simple balanced home diet with cereals, pulses, vegetables, fruits, milk and eggs or other protein as suitable.
  • Encourage play and physical activity every day.
  • Limit screen time, especially during meals.

When to consult

  • The child is not gaining weight for a long period.
  • There is a sudden loss of weight.
  • Developmental steps are clearly delayed compared to expected age.
  • You have any doubt about growth or feeding.
